Liverpool leapfrogged Chelsea to go two points clear at the top of the Premier League table after a 2-1 win over West Ham  at Upton Park.

Two Steven Gerrard penalties either side of half-time gave the Merseysiders the victory after the hosts levelled through Guy Demel's strike just before half-time.

Sportsmail's Matt Barlow was at Upton Park and provides his verdict on both sides.

WEST HAM

Adrian 5.5 - No terrible mistakes, decent late save but never inspires confidence. Sometimes rash, as when he fouled Flanagan for the penalty. Booked.

Guy Demel 6.5 - Scored his first West Ham goal, albeit laced with controversy, and linked up well on the right with Diame.

Winston Reid 7 - A calm and reassuring presence at the back. Controlled Sturridge well and organised his back-four.

James Tomkins 7 - Read the game well. Always better with Reid alongside him. Performed well but for the handball for the first Liverpool penalty. Booked. 

 

Pablo Armero 6 - Helped keep Sterling quiet in the first half. Good pace, uncertain on the ball at times. Little chemistry with Downing. Booked.

Mark Noble 6.5 - Vital role rummaging for possession, moving it on quickly. Essential in West Ham’s impressive start but overwhelmed after the break.

Matt Taylor 6 - Won the ball and passed it simply. Like Noble, tired after the break as Liverpool became more dominant.

Mohamed Diame 6.5 - Supplied West Ham with a little quality on the ball. Good understanding with Demel. But faded.

Kevin Nolan 5 - Chased the ball around but did not get close enough to Carroll to carry the goal threat he sometimes does.

Stewart Downing 5 - Flashes of dashing wing-play amid the usual disappointment and frustration and reluctance to shoot.

Andy Carroll 6.5 - Usual blend of aerial threat and miskicked. Crashed a powerful header against bar and claimed an illegal assist in Demel’s equaliser.

Subs: Nocerino (for Nolan 67 min) booked, 5. Jarvis (for Taylor 77). C.Cole (for Diame 84)

MANAGER: Allardyce 6.5 - Decent plan, almost worked. West Ham fans didn’t boo him.

 

LIVERPOOL

Simon Mignolet 7 - Coped well under the high stuff. Solid performance, good handling and mugged for the goal.

Glen Johnson 6 - Still not rampaging forward as he does at his best and still a little vulnerable in defence as he often is.

Martin Skrtel 7 - Strong and brilliantly combative. Relished the aerial attack and the wrestling contest with Carroll.

Mamadou Sakho 6 - Less comfortable with the West Ham striker than Skrtel but stepped in ably for the injured Daniel Agger.

 

Jon Flanagan 6 - Went forward well but tested in defence by Diame’s power and poise. Good charge to win the second penalty.

Philippe Coutinho 5 - Failed to influence the game in the first half as West Ham hustled in midfield and hooked at half-time.

Steven Gerrard 8 - Another imperious display of passing long and short, with two more nerveless penalty kicks converted.

 

Jordan Henderson 6.5 - Impressive mileage and industry, but without the touches of exquisite delivery he is capable of adding.

Raheem Sterling 6 - Bypassed for much of the first half. Much more influential after the break. Great effort late on.

Daniel Sturridge 5.5 - Quiet by recent standards. A couple of efforts flew off target. A few nice touches once his team were 2-1 ahead.

Luis Suarez 7 - Ever-threatening, even when not at his best. Hit the bar twice with two wonderful shots, won the first penalty and a constant nuisance.

 

Subs: Lucas Leiva (for Coutinho HT) improved the team when he came on and slid through splendid pass for Flanagan for the second pen, 7. Toure (for Sturridge 85).

MANAGER: Rodgers 7 - Good sub to replace Coutinho with Lucas.

REF: Anthony Taylor 6 - Allowed game to flow, good calls on Liverpool’s penalties and played some nice advantages. Somehow managed to spoil it by failing to notice Carroll’s assault on Mignolet, although at least it did not change the result.
